چکیده

A broadband gradient index (GRIN) metamaterial lens for gain enhancement of circularly polarized antennas has been automatically designed, fabricated and investigated. The GRIN metamaterial lens consists of an isotropic dielectric plate with a corresponding distribution of deep-subwavelength drill holes each with the same diameter. Such drill holes have a negligible influence on both the polarization state and the spectral response of the electromagnetic wave transmitting through the resulting GRIN metamaterial lens. Therefore, the GRIN metamaterial lens is polarization-insensitive and can efficiently transform spherical waves into planar waves over a very broad frequency range keeping the initial polarization states (e.g., linear or circular) scarcely changed. In the following we have derived analytical formulas that enable the setup of distribution rules Received 11 May 2013, Accepted 31 May 2013, Scheduled 7 July 2013 * Corresponding author: Fan-Yi Meng ([email protected]).

Circularly Polarized Circular Slot Antenna Array Using Sequentially Rotated Feed Network

This paper presents the design, simulation, and measurement of two low-cost broadband circularly polarized (CP) printed antennas: a single element and an array at C band. The proposed single element antenna is excited by an L-shaped strip with a tapered end, located along the circular-slot diagonal line in the back plane. From the array experimental results, the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth can r...

Design and Development of High Gain, Low Profile and Circularly Polarized Cavity-backed Slot Antennas Using High-order Modes of Square Shaped Substrtae Integrated Waveguide Resonator

In In this paper, two low profile, single fed cavity backed slot antennas providing a circularly polarized (CP) wave are introduced. One of the antennas presents a right-handed CP (RHCP) wave, while the other one offers a left handed CP (LHCP) wave. The proposed antennas consist of a square shaped Substrtae Integrated Waveguide (SIW) cavity incorporatng two couples of radiating slots to radiate...

Simultaneous Gain and Bandwidths Enhance- Ment of a Single-feed Circularly Polarized Microstrip Patch Antenna Using a Metama- Terial Reflective Surface

This paper proposes a metamaterial reflective surface (MRS) as a superstrate for a single-feed circularly polarized microstrip patch antenna (SFCP-MPA). It illustrates a simultaneous enhancement on antenna gain, impedance bandwidth (ZBW) and axial-ratio bandwidth (ARBW) by adding the MRS atop the SFCPMPA. The MRS can enhance the ZBW and ARBW by 3.5 and 9.9 times, respectively, compared to the c...

Several Types of Antennas Composed of Microwave Metamaterials

We present a review of several types of microwave antennas made of metamaterials, including the resonant electrically small antennas, metamaterial-substrate patch antennas, metamaterial flat-lens antennas, and Luneburg lens antennas. In particular, we propose a new type of conformal antennas using anisotropic zero-index metamaterials, which have high gains and low sidelobes. Numerical simulatio...

Introduction and Overview 1.1 Introduction

Conventional microstrip antennas in general have a conducting patch printed on a grounded microwave substrate, and have the attractive features of low profile, light weight, easy fabrication, and conformability to mounting hosts [1]. However, mi-crostrip antennas inherently have a narrow bandwidth, and bandwidth enhancement is usually demanded for practical applications. In addition, applicatio...
